Sustainable solutions power an autonomous future at Hexagon’s Autonomy and Positioning division

By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.


The U.N. SDGs identify "zero hunger" as a top priority, but the global body's most recent report — before the pandemic disrupted efforts to improve agricultural production and supply for vulnerable populations — painted a stark portrait of intensifying need. An estimated 690 million people suffered from hunger due to inadequacies in the global food system in 2019, an increase of 60 million over a five-year period.

Precise GNSS positioning, including 2 cm pass-to-pass accuracy for precision agriculture applications available through TerraStar Correction Services from Hexagon | NovAtel, enable row-crop farmers to minimize inputs and maximize production. That ability is key to SDG Target 2.4 and its objective of sustainable food production.

Hexagon’s Autonomy & Positioning division continues to refine and expand that capacity in its agricultural positioning and autonomy solutions. Not all crops have open skies over the equipment needed to sustainably tend them, and not all equipment can withstand environmental extremes that will be more frequently encountered due to climate change. Our hardware and software designs account for both — as tested last year in Arizona lemon, pecan and orange orchards during a heatwave that reached 44 degrees C (112 degrees F).
